The RITA award.

The RITA awards are the top award for romance fiction. They are organized by the Romance Writers of America, and presented annually at the RWA national conference in July.

RITAs are given in a number of categories, covering the spectrum of romance fiction -- contemporary, historical, fantasy etc. The categories are currently under review. You can read more about the award here. RWA's RITA award page.

(The RITA started out as the Golden Medallion.)

If I counted right, the fabulous Nora Roberts has twenty RITAs!

I have been honored to receive a RITA for five of my books.

Three books won in the Traditional Regency Romance category.

Two books won in a Historical Romance category.

Winning three RITA awards in the same category puts an author in the RWA Hall of Fame, and there's a special RITA statue for that, so there's the explanation for six golden ladies.
